How to rest between sets

There’s a lot of information out there about how much time to rest in between sets. All this information seems to overcomplicate a pretty simple topic. So, we’ve put together a no-bs guide on how you should rest between sets during your workout in order to maximise your recovery and train each set effectively.

Basics of resting between sets:

  • Resting between sets is very important.

  • There’s no magic number of minutes to rest.

  • Rest ends when you’re physically and mentally good to go.

Your resting checklist:

  • Am I out of breath?

  • Do I feel weak and unable to perform the next set as planned?

If you answered yes to any of the above two questions, take more rest before attempting the next set!

That’s it! Pretty simple, right?

You must have seen a lot of so-called fitness pros talk about resting for 1, 2, or 3 minutes; all these quoted numbers don’t really have a fact base. Resting is super individualised. For example, if you haven’t got enough sleep the night before, your rest times may change. Rest times also vary significantly based on factors such as the size of the individual, lung capacity, gender, etc. Follow the checklist we provided and listen to your body, and you’ll know exactly how much to rest!
